a living archive for a dying memory

This project brings together real stories of the Portuguese dictatorship — in video,

audio, photographs, and letters — shared by those who lived through this period.

We want to preserve personal experiences, bring generations closer together,

and make history more human and accessible.

Participate. Share. Help keep the collective memory alive.

What if History could be told by everyone?

We are creating a collaborative online archive, where everyone is invited to share memories from the times of the Portuguese dictatorship — through videos, audio recordings, photographs, letters, or other personal records.

This project is for those who lived through that period, for those who grew up hearing about it, and for those who know almost nothing about that time.

We want to connect generations through real stories, creating a space where collective memory is built together through conversation. Every contribution matters. Every story adds a new perspective.

By participating, you are helping preserve experiences that do not appear in school textbooks, but that are part of our shared culture and identity.

The final goal is to transform this living archive into a documentary series based on the stories shared by the community itself.

There are stories that aren't in books—they live in the memories of those who lived through them.

This project was born to preserve these voices. We are creating a multimedia digital archive dedicated to personal experiences during the period of the Portuguese dictatorship, gathering testimonies in video, audio, photographs, letters, and other intimate records of daily life.

More than just remembering the past, we want to bring generations closer together. To give space for those who lived through those years to tell their story and allow younger generations to discover this period through human, real, and personal accounts.

Each shared memory helps build a collective portrait of the country—made not only of historical events, but of lives, choices, fears, resistance, and hope.

This archive is an open invitation: to participate is to preserve. In the future, these stories will give rise to a documentary series built from the voices gathered here.

About the project

NAS BRUMAS DA MEMÓRIA began as a deeply personal and educational endeavor, driven by a profound passion for preserving the unique narratives of Portugal. As a non-commercial cultural project based in Portugal, we meticulously curate and digitise individual testimonies, providing a platform for people to share their experiences from a significant historical era. Our archive, utilising video, audio, photo, and written content, is built on integrity and a commitment to historical accuracy, ensuring that these invaluable stories endure for future generations. We believe every voice contributes to a more complete understanding of our collective history.
